Lonnie Butler, A/P*
America’s Boating Course & Seminar

In 2002, after taking the Squadron Boating Course in and buying a boat, Lonnie attended the subsequent classes as a proctor, and felt he would like to try teaching sections of the ABC course.

“I found real gratification,” he says, “in seeing people’s eyes light up when they’d hit on something they didn’t know.” So for three years he taught Seamanship and then Piloting for one series.  He also developed a presentation for transiting the Seattle Locks based on his own experiences.  “We now include that as an optional night with the ABC3 class series.”

Lonnie has held several leadership positions within the Power Squadron, and is a past commander of the Bellevue Squadron. “After going through the Bridge chairs, my interest lies in the education department,” he says.  “Teaching a class or subject reinforces one’s own knowledge of the subject. We continue to learn and will never know it all.”

*NOTE:  A/P indicates someone who has achieved advanced piloting status, as a result of successfully  completing  all of the advanced  piloting classes offered  by the US Power Squadron.
